Frenchman Victor Riu Wins Final Qualifer

MONDAY, MARCH 19, 2018 – It was a do-or-die contest with only three slots available for 33 top notch professionals and, in the end, it was the experienced Frenchman Victor Riu who carried the day. He fired six under par 66 to book his place at the 2018 Barclays Kenya Open slots in the pre-qualifying round at Vet Lab Sports Club.
It was nail-biting finish for the final two slots with matters having to be settled through a six-way play-off and eventually sudden death featuring Sweden’s Niclas Johanson, Portugal’s Pedro Figueredo and Mateusz Gradecki of Poland, after tying on three under par 69.
Johanson and Figueredo sailed through joining Riu in the starting line-up for the 2018 Barclays Kenya Open that begins on Thursday at Muthaiga Golf Club. Niclas holed a birdie on the third hole, while Pedro parred at the fifth to claim the third position.
Gradecki will however, be the first reserve just in case of a cancellation among those listed to play. England’s Samuel Robertshawe and Ireland’s Gary Hurley will be second and third reserve.
Of the local golfers, the best performance came from Muthaiga’s Nelson Mudanyi on a two over par 74. Anil Shah shot three over par 75.
